To provide drinking water to the masses is a major concern for the Delhi Government.
With continuous urbanization & ever increasing population in Delhi, the demand for
water has risen significantly over the last decade. To meet the shortfall of
drinking water, Delhi Jal Board, under the dynamic Leadership of Smt. Sheila
Dikshik, Hon'able Chief Minister of Delhi, has undertaken the largest project in its
history. Construction of 635 MlD drinking water Treatment Plant, Sonia Vihar on
Design ,Build & operate basis awarded to Degremont -world leader in water treatment
, using state of art technology suiting Indian conditions.

Before the implementation of the plant total supply of Potable water was 670 Milloin
Gallon per Day as against the demand of 850 MGD.With the implementation of the Sonia
Vihar Water Treatment Plant the supply has almost rose to the unbelievable rate of
810MGD.In comparison to other conventional schemes the water losses are as small as
1.5% from the entire plant. The plant is India's largest single stage water
treatment plant with complete sludge & wastewater recovery.This unit operates under
the principle of an up-flow current through a suspended sludge blanket which helps
in 95-99% removal of algae It utilizes single layer of homogenous sand & is suitable
for high filtrations rates & extended filtration cycle .It promises treatment
capacity of 635 millions liters per day catering to 3.5 million population of Delhi.
Degremont has ensured optimum land usage saving 50% of the area. This fully
automated SCADA enabled plant is well proven & offers extremely efficient three
phase treatment of raw water. Its efficient design provides excellent treated water
quality .The parameters with regards to taste & odour ,colour, turbidity, pH, Free
chlorine residual, Iron ,total, & residual are unobjectionable.
